Tax Credits

I am only going to say this once, but they The Government have taken away the Working man - Woman's help..I have never heard of so many Horror Story's including myself, or what has happened to people.
One friend of ours was stopped £383 a month, now gets just £38, the man only earns 15,000..another was stopped £200, they only worked and earned a year just over 15,000, We ourselves do not qualify for Tax Credits, as my Hubby earns over 26,000, you may think we don't need it, my Hubby works 70hrs a week..and what we did get helped....now we have had Tax credits asking for Moneys..ie overpayment..We could never guess how much he earned as Hubby got Bonus and that is different every week..so now we have to pay back, and because we don't received Tax Credits no more the Government changed the income bands.we have.to find this money...where as before it came out of the Tax Credits and payed of slowly..now its demanded back...What is this country coming too??? There must be others out there who are as angry as us..

Drops like that are unlikely to be due to a change in the rules, they are more likely to be due to changes in circumstances. An increase in income can take a year or two to fully be accounted for in tax credits due to the disregard.

When I had my son 9 years ago I chose to go back to work. My choice. But child care was almost as much as my wage.

I had heard of tax credits so i applied. We were entitled to £11.00 per month ??? wow.
Ok we got that for 12 months at the end of which the Tax Credit people decided that they had in fact over paid me and instead I had to pay it all back.

Thank god it was only £11.oo per month!

isamog - Sorry but I work work hard like a lot of people do and I still have to juggle from time to time so why not you? I always thought tax credits where there to help not to subsidize.

Times are not easy so you are just like everyone else.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

You were getting tax credits, now you're not, thats the "bit" someone else was paying for. Your hubby is earning a good wage and no doubt you are still claiming "some" benefits, so you have a substantial income.

Companies that are making vast profits should pay fair wages and not expect the tax payer to subsidise its employees. What is the point of minimum wage if people cant live on it? While Tesco and the like make millions by not paying a living wage. It is wrong that little families have to rely on the state even when the parent is working.

9 out of 10 families with children originally qualified for tax credits so obviously the govt have now got an unenviable task of weaning many off them. It's incredible that 90% of this group of households were eligible for additional state benefits.

I'm not blaming claimants - this is a system issue.

A better way to have dealt with this is through lowering taxation for those on low incomes (which has been partly remedied by an increase in the personal allowance) or increasing the national minimum wage.

I don't know the stats now but when the new govt came to power, more was being paid out in benefits and allowances than employees paid in income tax receipts - a very nasty and unsustainable imbalance in the nations books.

"Treasury figures show that welfare payments will exceed income tax receipts by almost £25 billion. Normally, income tax receipts comfortably cover the benefits bill.

According to an official Treasury forecast, benefits will cost £170.9 billion in 2010/11. That is equal to what the Government will spend on the NHS, schools and universities combined.
This year will be the first in a decade that benefits cost more than workers pay in income tax. "
