Buying a Pomeranian?

I have just spoken to a breeder and then Pom rescue centre and they were very helpful!
These are not the best dogs to keep alone that long, like some of you said! It looks like we will put this off until one of us works closer to home and can spend a hour with it at lunch!
The rescue home said we would be coming home to a mess everyday and the dog will think this is normal and be doing it all the time!
So looks like it's going to be a pair of cats then...... we are very disappointed
Thanks for the advice!!!0 -
I dont think you should be disappointed. A pair of cats might just surprise you. We have 3 dogs, and we're lucky enough for them not to be left alone all day. However we also adopted two old cats from Battersea in November. Cats are 10 & 12yrs old. These cats have turned out to be the most 'dog like' cats I have ever seen. They come when call and stop short of sitting on command for food. They are full of fuss and love and very interactive and animated. Is almost like having another two (rather small) dogs in the house.
Speak to the rescue about the cats you want to adopt, find out their temperament, and be specific about what you want from a cat personality wise. Not all cats like a fuss and some are just happy to see you when there is food and then wont see you until the next meal time.

Hi there - we have a pomeranian and she is left for a few hours a day with no problem, although she does tell us off when we get back in and sometimes does a pee on the kitchen floor just to let us know she is not happy being left. She is not destructive at all and just sleeps while we are out but she does prefer to be with somebody. She has never snapped at another person and is very patient with young children however she is very wary of other dogs and will go for them if they get too close ( she was bitten by another dog, not badly but I think this is why she does not like other dogs ) she doesnt eat much so costs that way are quite low. She will go on walks but has to be carried when she plonks her bum down and decides that she has had enough. She does need to be bathed regularily as she is white but she is a minature so it doesnt take very long. She barks when the door bell goes, if somebody gets up to leave the room quickly, when the phone goes and at neighbours ( which they find quite funny as she is so small ) Pom's tend to stick to one person however if that person is away they are fickle and will bond with another. So in our house she follows me everywhere but if I am away and she stays at my Mum & Dads she follows my Mum everywhere. She gets a lot of attention when we go out which can be a pain and does not like travelling in the car unless she is sat on somebodies knee. Actually while writing this she sounds like a nightmare but she is so adoreable we wouldnt be without her. I got a pom because I am allergic to most dogs.

Hi Jammy - sorry have been off line for a few hours. Mostly for the odd hour here and there probably a few times a day while I pop out but sometimes she is left for about 4 hours and as I say she doesnt wreck the place but she makes it known that she does not like being left alone. If she didnt play up so much in the car I would take her with me most places but she gets really upset and I have tried various different car seats and cages etc. If I am going to be out all day I am lucky because I can leave her at my parents house.

because if the breeder has advertised via the kennel club additional checks will have been made on the breeder.
#
Unfortunately this is not the case. The kennel club do absolutely no checks and anyone who has pedigree pups can go on their breeders list.#
#Jammy I think you will find two cats just as much fun as a dog. Good luck0 -
After a talk we have decided to get 2 cats! We will get a dog sometime in the future!
