I was once rejected for a job, and told that no other candidate had been recruited either. I offered to help them out on a temporary basis for 3 months while they carried on interviewing.
That was six and a half years ago. I'm still there.
Long shots do sometimes pay off. Ask yourself what's the worse that could happen by giving it a go (further rejection / annoying the employer or agency etc), and if you're prepared to live with that, then give it a go!0
