Car Insurance and non UK resident

Hello
My car insurance is due. My husband, who now lives abroad permanently, is the policy holder.
Can he still hold this policy or does he need to be UK resident? If not, guess I will need to get the policy in my name. I have always been the named driver so hope I can get some credit for that, though have shifted around different insurance companies. If not, might be a bus pass for me!
Thanks

He needs to speak to them to advise them of the current position. They may not want to continue cover, as normally you have to be UK resident.
He can arrange cover elsewhere in his name as a non UK resident. e.g Stuart Collins.com.
If you want it in your name, you will have to register with DVLA the V5 registration document in your name. You would also have to consider the non claims discount issue. Without any no claims discount entitlement, it may be more expensive that your husband arranging a policy as a non UK resident. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
also worth noting as you are only a named driver, im guessing as he is out the country, you drive the car more than him. this may be viewed on by the insurance company as fronting, which is something they do not take nicely to, and usually invalidates the insurance, and they can then refuse a claim if something happens.
IMHO the moment he moved abroad, he should have stopped the insurance, and you took out a policy instead0 -
Thanks.
This only occurred to me too, the other day when the renewal docs came through. He is transferring the vehicle to me. Will give them a call. Will take a look at that company mentioned.
Hopefully can get some named driver discount and maybe due to age might be a bit cheaper. If not, might just go for a 3rd party fire and theft as car only worth about £2k now. Not ideal but hard to get about here without a car as semi-rural.
