Options
Hi,

my husband has been recently diagnosed with adhd and his consultant is deciding what would be the best medication for him, but I was wondering what are the benefits of taking medication and how it will help.

thanks

People on this board can't really answer that as no one is medically trained. You need to discuss this with your consultant and then your Husband can make an informed choice.

  • There can be quite a few "benefits" - but do talk it through with his consultant and if they suggest any particular drug(s). Google them and see if they have a good reputation regarding side effects and what they are used for. My OH is on Venlafaxine for example which I happen to know is used to help adults with ADHD sometimes. Whether suitable for your OH - who knows? I am not a medic. He is on them for Anxiety/paranoia. If you think you have not got full answers, keep asking until you fully understand it all.

You should be aware that there is disagreement on whether adult ADHD actually exists. The working theroy at this time is that it should only be considered if undiagnosed as a child.

One of the great difficulties of having ADHD is the number of ill informed people who claim there is no such thing. It is recognised by mainstream science and medicine and is in DSM IV and the World Health Authority's ICD 10. It also has its own place in the NICE guidelines (though I don't think Venlafaxine is listed as a treatment).

Every relatively new mental health matter has a chorus of naysayers claiming that there is no such thing and that the sufferers should "just try harder" or "pull themselves together". Depression, post traumatic stress disorder, OCD and so on, all had people claiming there is no such thing, and, unfortunately people with ADHD now have to go through this, adding to their difficulties.

I suggest you take a look at http://www.aadduk.org - there are links to the NICE guidelines, lots of other information and an adult ADHD dedicated forum.

However, if you actually read the NHS guidance, from which my information comes, you will find that I am not so ill informed.
You will also find that the DSM IV is American and not widely used in the UK - we use the ICD10 who specifically make reference to presentation during formative years.
