Navara D40 Altenator

I beleive that my alterator is on the way out. I'm occasionally getting the brakewarning light and battery warning light coming on at the same time. This is intermittent. We've put a new alterator belt on and checked and the the battery is occasionally failing to charge. I need a new alterator and also a tensioning wheel(pully) which also seems to be worn. Typically as usual the cost of Nissan parts will need me to remortage my house to get a replacement. Can anyone advise of a suitable supplier which does not cost the earth for a D40 altenator and tension wheel/pully?

The symptoms you describe above are common for both the alternator and voltage regulator, so it could be either of them.

To be 100% sure use the AA/RAC to diagnose it (provided you have cover) - just ring them and tell them some scary red light is flashing on the dashboard and you're not sure if you can drive. It should take them 5 minutes to diagnose.

Alternatively find a local Bosch car electrician - they can also diagnose for free (or a small charge) and replace whatever part is needed for much less than a dealership.

Firstly get the part number of the alternator and search for a replacement prices on Ebay/Eurocarparts/etc to get an idea of £ involved.

as gb says find out how much a local core reconditioner will charge before you go anywhere else
they can usually fit and obviously give a guarantee rather than buying say s/h off the bay too
and these arent cheap from dealer £400 i think or was it £800
  • Looking at an Hours work to get an Alternator off a D40... As sugegsted I'd look at getting it rebuilt it'll be be cheaper and have some kind og warranty.
Failing that Google Milner off Road as they'll probably do the Alternator and every other bit for Jap 4x4 Stuff.. With the tensioner wheel you'll probably be able to just swap the bearing out for one from a Bearing factor cheaply.
