A test on its own isn't expensive. We carry out the sampling ourselves and the test itself at a local lab costs under £20 a sample.
If you have a Rhodar local to you (or any other company that deals with asbestos sampling for that matter) ask them what they'd charge to carry out sampling on a textured ceiling. I would expect an asbestos surveying company to charge you somewhere between £100 and £150 for basic samples to be taken and tested. I know Rhodar charge us around £100 if they do the sampling/testing for us on the odd occasion we're too busy to do the sampling ourselves so chances are it may cost a bit more to 'Joe Public'.
You do need to find out if the textured coating has asbestos in it before you go any further. Whether you pay for the sampling or the homeowner does is up to you to sort between you.0
