Had to have my system restored due to a virus. Since then, every time I try to rip a cd it gets to 30% and then comes up with 'error'.

Thought it might be Windows Media Player, so tried a couple of others (Songbird and VMA) but still got the same problem.

I've got Windows Media Player 11, fyi.

Can anyone give me a clue on what might be wrong? All help, as always, greatly appreiciated.

Can you read CD's? You need to establish if this is a hardware or software fault.
    What OS?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Preferred choice used to be http://www.audiograbber.org/ - but make sure you've not got a hardware issue there first.

I hope this is not seen a a silly question but does the problem occur when ripping one particular cd or on any CD?

    Any Cd.

Just tried playing 3 or 4 different ones and am now getting the message 'Windows Media Player cannot read the CD. The disc might be dirty or damaged. Turn on error correction, and then try again.'

I've done this and still no joy. Any ideas?

I'd probably run a disc cleaner through the drive. Can you read data discs / CD|DVD ROMS (and copy files) OK ?? Disc in the right way up (don't laugh).

Copy protected CD's ??? Sony Rootkit stopping you (used to self install when putting CD albums in made around the 2005 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal)

Laptop or Desktop? Try an external USB CD/DVD or replace. I've had some (NEC I recall) that refuse to read the TOC on the disc because of a driver issue.
  • Still having problems with this. I don't think it's the drive now as I have been able to install various programs onto my pc using cd-roms, but am getting to the end of my tether as each time I go to rip music , it gets to 30% on the first track, then goes straight to error for the rest.
