    Before you think about claiming there is one further thing to bear in mind.

    If you take out any further policies in the future, you may well find that your premiums will have increased due to this, and even if your insurers refuse to pay out, there will probably still be a record of the attempted claim.

    IMO, you should read the policy very carefully to see if you can find out exactly how your insurers define a break in, and if there is anything that states that the property must be locked, then it may not even be worth trying.

    I find that proposal forms for travel insurance do not ask about my claims history, and over the years I have made a few claims and not noticed that they make any difference to the premiums quoted to me. So I think that for travel insurance, unlike home or motor insurance, this is unlikely to be an issue for people who are honest and not particularly accident-prone.

    Thanks for all your replies, unsurprisingly the claim was rejected over the phone. However they told me there and then and I didn't have to claim and wait to hear back from them etc. Oh well, I'll know better next time !
