We are in Kent too (Medway), if you want to see the setup I'd be happy to explain it. The price you have been quoted is more than we paid in Nov 2011 for a 3kWp system. A friend used a firm from Ashford for theirs which came in approx same price as ours at £9k. Prices have dropped a lot since then but I can let you have a contact for the firm we used - they may well be able to do before August as they got our panels in within 2 weeks from the first FIT cut in Dec.

We found a few suppliers were very optimistic on the electricity savings (£200+ is over optimistic) and some very dishonest using very high inflation figures to give massive 25 year returns. I'd be highly dubious about any company using inflation examples of more than 5%.

This video shows time lapse of the solar panel installation

Any reputable solar installer should give you a break down an all their assumptions about inflation and FiT rates. If they don't walk away.

Also, you do want to make sure you get your installation done before August 1st, but not for system that costs twice the price of the Tesco system.

All the quotes we had gave that breakdown. Its just that some were very misleading in their figures and unless you understand compound interest could well have been swayed by their numbers.

Showing 15% inflation over 25 years makes a massive difference to the projected returns compared to 5% but at the time fuel had increased by 15% so they were trying it on!

  • I also heard it can be quite attractive to a buyer should you be looking to sell up also!
