Card reader for ipad3

Wonder if anyone could point me in the direction of a sd card reader and camera connector suitable for use with the iPad 3. I know apple do one but they are pretty expensive. There are some available on line for about £5 but I have heard stories that they don't work properly, something to do with the power needed to run properly. If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

Okay, here's the thing. The power problem is specifically limited to the USB side of things. So with the Apple one you actually get two separate parts in the Camera connection kit. The SD card reader part, as well as the USB reader part. Supposed to be used with the USB lead with your camera, but also for things like USB sticks, USB HDD's. The issue comes with how much power is needed, that is pulled from the iPad itself, so if it's more than can be provided, it just wont work. The SD card reader seems fine, no issues there. I bought one for my camera and iPad2, and can use both the USB one, as well as the SD card. Pulls images from both ways with no problem. Have not tried it with HDD's or sticks, have no need for it.

7dayshop sent an email a while ago with an iPad one, for a fiver basically. I persuaded my mum to buy one and try with her iPad2, as she was planning eventually to buy the apple one I had. So we tried it with her iPad (same camera as mine) and worked both ways too. That's with a TZ18 panasonic. What apple did say was that if the USB didn't work, it was no big loss due to the SD card reader. But it is just that, an SD card reader. Other cameras use different cards too. This is where the 7dayshop one is a bit better, because it can take SD, Micro SD, MMC, MS DUO, MS, MS M2 Cards.

Now cons v pros. Apple one is nice, small compact and can be used with almost all cases etc as it doesn't have a big footprint. The 7dayshop one is quite big, and requires my mum to remove her case etc. Also you have to switch between usb and card with 7dayshop. With my apple one, I can fit it in the case, mum can't with hers.

You pay for the format, the look, the fit of the apple one @£25, compared with £3.99 for the 7dayshop one.
Whether it'll work with your camera/SD card, you will only know when you try it.

As a side note, apparently from searching it seems those that bought the connection kit from apple had had it work prior to one of their updates. After that it came up with accessory not supported when they tried to view via USB cable. So who knows, occasionally things are fixed randomly in the future. They did that with docks at some point too. All mine said not supported, and eventually after the next update they worked again.

Cheers lifeforms will try the 7dayshop one first and if no good only cost a fiver. Googler this is a money saving website that's why I said the apple product was expensive in comparison with cheaper copies.
