Why are some threads unreadable to non forum members?

Why are some threads not available to read unless you are a forum member? I didnt realise this till last night.
I saw a thread in discussions that I thought would be of interest to a relative so tried to email the link to them but then I found that it doesnt allow them to read it unless they are a member of the forum.
I logged out and saw that the sub forum 'discussions' isnt available at all unless I log in. Don't know if there are more that arent viewable to non members I only noticed this one

Not always. We went through bit of a bad patch and Martin thought DT was bringing down the tone so he hid it
