Who should be main driver?

My husband and I have just gone from owning two cars down to just one. We're trying to arrange car insurance and we're wondering who to put down as the main driver. I've been worried by lots of press articles about 'fronting' but for us the truth is that we really will be sharing the car 50/50. So there's no 'main' driver as such. We both cycle to work so the car only gets used at weekends and occasionally if we go out in the evening. So, moneysavers, does it matter who we put down as the main driver for our car insurance??

Don't worry about "fronting" - insurers are concerned when there is an attempt to keep premiums low by adding a novice driver as a named driver onto a policy where a mature experienced driver is wrongly claiming to be the main driver.

If it's 50/50 or thereabouts there won't be any problem which one you nominate as the main driver.

Maybe do virtual quotes online to find out which premium is cheaper for which one of you as main, and you have your answer!

OP , you would probably be wise for you and your Husband to take year about as the main driver.

This way you will both keep your NCB live seeing as how you have went from 2 cars down to one.

After 2 years any NCB the main driver of the car you have sold/disposed of had will expire and if you ever go back to 2 cars you will have to start from scratch so my suggestion as above ensures that this wont happen

Not necessarily. Many companies give full NCD to named drivers if they ever start their own separate policy.

Many? I can think of two and in my experience they tend to be on the more expensive side.

OP.....If you both have significant NCB then it is a good idea to rotate the policy holder every year or two so you both retain your NCB for use if you ever get another vehicle.

I searched almost every company I had ever heard of when I was moving from being a named driver to holding my own insurance policy and most of them would give a discount to named drivers taking out their own policy but I found only 1 or 2 who would actually allow me to use my FULL named driver discount.....

Maybe seeing as how you know these "many" companies who will allow the full NCD you could link them.....maybe it could help the OP in the future (or others reading this thread)?

  • If it's fifty/fifty it doesn't matter. They will only question it if one of you is a significantly higher risk.
