AV - Buy it or not?

  • There's little to choose between the threat protection of the main players - they all get caught out from time to time.

I used AVG for ages before switching to Avast about 3 years ago. The last update slowed down my system measurably so I switched to MSE and haven't had a problem with it.

It's impossible to predict which AV will be best for any given system because it's the little conflicts with the other software installed that causes problems.

Except Norton/Symantec. I've never found a system it DIDN'T slow down!
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

With AVG free you don't get "Priority product updates". Read whatever you like into that!

In March 2012 Microsoft Security Essentials was the most popular antivirus product in North America and the second most popular in the world.

It found several infections on a work PC that McAffee corporate didn't!

Always a bit difficult to defend using paid software when there is a variety of free software around but I personally feel some programs are worth paying for. Sandboxie and MBAM Pro are two of them.
Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.

Thanks all for your input, much appreciated.

I have though downloaded the free Avast as I have felt 'secure' with the paid for version over the past 12 months (that was a bit like commentators curse!)

May I ask if I should enable the Boot-time Scan please?

Look forward to your knowledgeable answers as always and thanks in advance.

Run as needed; if it's anything like a conventional run-time scan it could take anything from a few minutes to several hours.

    Oh, ok TangleFoot, thank you.

The blurb made me think I should enable so I'll change that now.

Advice very much appreciated, thank you.
