Cheap places to stay in Edinburgh?

Can anyone recommend some cheap places (really don't want to be paying much more than £50 a night - but think this is probably asking too much from what I've found!) to stay in Edinburgh in August?
I know, I know, terrible time of year to be asking this question for a city centre but I would really like to go to the Fringe for a few days
Won't have a car so preferably we would like to be in the centre within walking distance from everything. I don't know the area at all though so if there is somewhere with good transport links into the centre that we could stay (but somewhere that would still be near a few small shops/takeways or something) that would be fine too

Finding accomodation during the festival period is your main problem. I would normally say Holiday Inn or Travel Lodge, there are a few of those dotted about the city centre but heaven knows what the booking conditions are like just now. Have you actually tried any of those?0

They have rooms available but they've (unsurprisingly) doubled their prices for the two weeks of the festival.
I don't think is the best holiday idea I've ever had :rotfl:0 -
They're all at it and have been for many years so there is no escape from it, especially when you want to be city centre. Anything for £50 is going to be a right howf unless you are very lucky. The only thing I could suggest is that you try some of the villages further out but still on the main rail lines. Ring the Oatridge Hotel in Uphall and see what they are offering rooms for. http://www.theoatridgehotel.co.uk/0

The Youth Hostels in Edinburgh are excellent and very cheap.
