On JSA - off on holiday question

Hi folks,

I am currently on JSA (Contribution based) and I am going on a family holiday. My sign on date is the 11th (Tomorrow), and leave on the 22nd, so just a few days short of what would be my next sign on.

I understand I have to sign off, then when I come back do a rapid sign on. When I sign on tomorrow, my usual payment comes through on the thursday (14th). Would that be a full payment (£112~)? As I've been told two different things from the advisors =S

Also any idea on the best time to do the sign off? Also been given two different answers

  • Yes, payment is made in arrears so you will be paid as normal this week.
  • Ok thanks. Could have waited till tomorrow but has been bugging me all day.

in the UK or abroad ? (If in the UK, then I don't think you need to sign off, although you do need to let them know in advance)

p00hsticks is right, if holiday is in Uk, you can be excused from looking for work for 2 weeks per year. UK includes Northern Ireland and I think the Isle of Man, not sure about Channel Islands.

Procedure is you tell, them dates you're going and coming back, signing day will be day after you get back. Means payment will be a few days late.

Just for info: Isle of Man is not part of UK. so if OP is holidaying there they will need to make appropriate arrangements accordingly.

You can be treated as looking for work, but not as available for work.

Are you leaving the UK ??
A friend of mine went to France for 3 days his claim was stopped, they think that if on holiday you are not available for work..

I'm not sure but I don't think you are able to go on hols if on JSA due to not being available for work..

Yes: you need to sign off if you leave the UK, but let them know what is happening so that when you come back they can do a 'rapid reclaim'.

If holidaying in the UK you have to sign saying that you will come back if needed for an interview and also how you will search for jobs while away.
