Make your own Sweet Condensed Milk

I have just found this recipe, haven't tried it yet as I only found it a couple of minutes ago.

We don't really use condensed milk but thought this may be worth a try for someone out there.

You only need 4 ingredients which most of us already have in the cupboard.

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dry powdered milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp butter

;)

Just looked at the Carnation website and theirs is "Made with just two ingredients, fresh whole milk and natural sugar" which'd be only two ingredients.

It looks so magical when it's in a tin - and then it turns out they just bunged sugar into milk! Amazing bit of marketing.... that's like pancake mix, or dumpling mix .... good marketing, unnecessary product.

Thank you so much for that, it had never occurred to me to look up how to make condensed milk myself! For some reason I always imagined it was something you couldn't really make at home. It's amazing what you can learn on this site! :D

Thanks for that - DD1 asked me just the other day if there was any way we could make condensed milk at home - now I know how!

But why make it when condensed milk is really cheap to buy?

I think it's more a case of having things in the cupboard to make your own when you realize you need a tin and can't get out to the shops.

    :D

Or, you could just save yourself £1 a tin if you already have dried milk powder.

    ;)
  • Now you see I don't find it particularly cheap to buy. I'm going to try this - nothing ventured nothing gained. I loooove condensed milk - most of it gets spooned straight into my mouth when I'm making fudge etc. Yum!

Let us all know how you get on with it but don't shoot the messenger if it is yuk!

I don't go through enough in a year to warrant buying the milk powder!

There is always a can in the larder for emergency comfort eating!

It's now in my recipe book - I just need to buy powdered milk. I didn't know you could even get that these days. I think there must have been a milk shortage sometime in the 70's as I remember my dad having tons of St Ivel's 5 Pint in the house. Horrible horrible stuff.
