HSBC PPI... can I claim

I have had 2 loans in the past with HSBC, one in 2006 and one in 2008. On both occasions I have not wanted PPI as I have been in employment where I am entitled to sick pay or redundancy severance, and my parents have savings for me 'for a rainy day'. Both times they said the loan would probably not be accepted without PPI, and the second time they told me that every time I have a credit check my credit rating goes down, so if they attempted to put a loan through without PPI not only would it probably decline but it would affect my credit rating in the future.
I no longer have an account with HSBC but still know my account number and sort code. I do not have any paperwork from my loan.
Does it sound like I would be eligible to claim my PPI back?

Many thanks
