Any suggestions much appreciated. :j

Caldicot Castle - that's after the Severn Crossing, but roughly half way.

It's probably too close to Reading for you, but everyone tells me that Lydiard Park in Swindon is nice

Or St Fagans just outside Cardiff

St Fagans is a wonderful day out. It's free to get in and you just pay parking (£3 I think still)- the thing is you'll want to spend longer than just your lunch break there!
Margam Country Park is lovely too but a bit dearer for entrance and to be honest you're only an hour from Tenby then so you will be eager to just get there and not stop.
I think you need to stop nearer the Severn Bridge so probably Caldicot Castle is your best solution?

Tredegar House is next to J28 and has nice grounds and a cafe. There is a fee to enter the house but the grounds are free entry
