Why do my cucumbers always die..?

Hi,

Every year I try and grow cucumbers, and every year they die. The leaves start to go white around the edged and then shrivel up and die.

See pic for this year's victims: scaled.php?server=513&filename=photo37l.jpg&res=landing

Any ideas what's causing this?

Cheers

Pete

I had this happen last year too, but it was later in the season and my plants were already established, it turned out to be red spidermites! Yuk! You might need a microscope to spot them and they are usually on the underside of the leaves.
It might be something worth researching on google- but i'm not sure it'll be the same thing but my plants did dry up and then die like your photo.

It happened to one of my cucumbers closest to the open door this year in the green house, asked in the garden centre and was told its common with cucumbers, they don't like draughts or adverse weather conditions when starting to grow.

    where did you keep them?

Have they been protected from the cold temperatures?

They've been out in the greenhouse for the last few weeks. Not sure if it's been cold enough to do any damage? The tomatos, peppers, aubergines etc alongside them have been fine.

I just spotted that mine has departed this world. I forgot to protect it over these colder days and I'm SOOO annoyed with myself.

My cucumber was Mini F1 that died. The Hana mini cucumber doing fine both were in the same growbag. Will go and get a new cucumber plant this week at plant centre.
  • If you look around gardening forums round the net, everyone is reporting the same things - stuff like lettuces and spinach are going to seed, cucumbers are dying, beetroot isnt growing. The only salad crops that seem to be doing any good are tomatoes and celery in greenhouses and polytunnels.

What compost are you using? At what date after sowing the seed did you !!!!! out? Do you water initially with tepid water? Are they in direct sunlight? They do look a mite sunburned.

    I think it's B&Q multipurpose.

No, straight form the tap. Should I?

They're in the greenhouse so are in direct sunlight for part of the day. Should they not be then?

    Thanks

What was !!!!! ? pr-ick out. We only pr-ick out at seven days from seeding, give or take a day or two. Any longer and the percentage of failures increases.
No, straight form the tap. Should I? From the tap, the water is cold-tepid is best, less stress on a fragile plant.

They're in the greenhouse so are in direct sunlight for part of the day. Should they not be then? Would prefer that the seedlings were shaded a bit, full sun can be dodgy.
    Hope this helps.
