parquet/wood flooring - Would you recommend diy?

Hi All,

Im after some advice around whether or not I should do the parquet flooring? Is it a nightmare DIY job?

I have lounge, diner and hallway to do. Currently all in dark varnish.

Would love to hear your experiences of doing it and what you needed to do it.

Any article links would be great too.

Thanks

If you mean sanding the floor and varnishing/treating, then the answer could well be something I'm interested in too.

Only I'm buying a flat with parquet flooring in exactly the same rooms as you mention, but covered by carpets at the moment so won't know until I'm in if it's the lovely golden colour I'm hoping it will be.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Same position as me! But I know that mine is dark varnish/stain so could be harder to do. Cant wit to get going but still 5-6 away from moving in. :-) Why would people put carpet over quality flooring like parquet??

Would love to hear peoples experiences of doing this.

one of my customers has just had their parquet flooring sanded - she had a guy in to do it and it took him 2-3 days , it was a large area , he used a main sander , which produced very little dust , then repaired the edges and used a large hand held disc sander , then he cleaned it , sealed it , then used another lighter sander to smooth it off then gave it another coat , resanded and then gave it a final coat , whilst it wasn't stained dark it was still quite a job to do and now looks fantastic, if you have the time and energy to do it properly then you will get great results , - i personally would get quotes in as it is a labour of love

Parquet flooring certainly looks beautiful and is hardwearing, that is for sure. We moved into our bungalow 3 years ago that hat this type of flooring throughout, for us it was a nightmare with having pets, it was like watching 'dancing on ice' with the pets sliding all over the place. Also a room without carpeting can, not always though, be very noisey when foot traffic come through.

The best of luck to you, I thought that I would share our funny experience with you.

    All the best
