Splitting holiday cost

Hi all,
I am new here but often read the post and find them very helpful. However I cannot find one to help me out here.
My family (19 of us) are trying to organise a family holiday to a cottage. Now my family are a bit weird, my uncle and aunt won't sleep in the same room and my cousin won't have her kid in the same room as her.
My uncle found a place which is £5495 for 4 nights. The place has 14 bedrooms. He has said we should split the bill per person which works out at about 289 each person. however as there are 2 of us that would work out to 578 pounds for our sub family.
Now my idea is that we should pay for the rooms that we are using so as 13 rooms are being used it would work out to about 422 per room.
For most sub families this works out as a saving but for my uncle and aunt (who won't share) they would obviously pay more.
My argument is that I have also found a 13 bed place for a grand cheaper.
Do people think I am being unreasonable at expecting people to pay per room. The only one that seems to be bothered about it is myself and my uncle and aunt who don't want to pay more.
My argument is that 578 is too much for 4 nights minus food where as 422 is slightly more affordable.
Advice would be appreciated.

I'd go per room too.
If your Aunt and Uncle won't sleep in the same room and your cousin will need 2 rooms, why should they be paying the same rate as you and your OH would be for using 1 room?
If they would share rooms, you wouldn't need so many bedrooms, which means you could find somewhere cheaper again.
I know what I'd do. I'd get my passport and go for a week in the sun for that priceTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
How Much?:eek::eek:make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
definitely go for a per room rate - otherwise those who do share could justifiably ask for more rooms to occupy!0

As McKneff says . Thats four nights  . What we do as a large family is ignore any kids in numbers then split the bill between each grown up . Its about being together . When are you thinking of going. I could get you 14. 2 or 3 bedroom lodges for less than about 3k all within 200 yards of each other given time. Not a statley home but you all have your own space (about £200 each sub family) hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
Hi all,
Thanks for your advice, the plan that they thought was that they want 1 place where we can all play like the waltons and eat together. Obviously in practice that probably won't happen with 19 people. Thanks for your offer of a place, very kind. I will email out to them all to see what the say.
The funny thing is that we are not even planning to go until new year 2013!!
I would like to go abroad but my nan is quite old and won't travel!
Thanks for all your help. I said to them all what about Butlins or somewhere like that!0 -
I think the fairer system would be per room, as you suggest, but it's probably not worth falling out over - depends how vocal your aunt and uncle are about it, I suppose. We tend to split costs per person, counting the kids as a half.
Big houses do get booked up quick so you are sensible to be booking now for New Year. Enjoy it!0 -
Just to keep people updated, if they are interested!!
My family have been very stubborn on this matter and have not even been willing to meet in the middle. In fact, unfortuntely it has caused some arguments.
The annoying thing is everyone I ask agrees that when you go on a holiday you should pay per room.
The even more annoying thing is that they are stil going and because we are not going they are now all having to pay the extra to fund our missing places.
Families eh!!!0 -
you've probably had a lucky escape. if you are all arguing like this before you go imagine when 19 of you are all holed up in one house together, especially when the alcohol starts flowing.0

I hope you get to go somewhere nice instead:)Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0
