I find the VHF signal gives more volume on my Hifi than th corresponding DAB signal.

Assuming you to have separate VHF and DAB tuners, the signal strength is irrelevant, and the volume will be a function of the output level of each unit. It's dependent on the gain of the output stage of the tuner, not the signal strength at the input.

If you have a aerial input on your radio try connecting it to you tv aerial. Alternately try moving and extending the aerial. Aerials are directional so try pointing the aerial in all directions. If this is successful a roof or loft mounted FM/AM aerial could be an option.
If you have a freeview box for your tv which receives radio stations this may have an output to connect to a music system.

Just a thought about internet radio, are the same programs played on 5live internet as 5live MW all the time? I listen to the sport on BBC london, and sometimes they have the rights to broadcast the football games on the radio, but not the internet, which is really irritating as i cant get BBC london in the house via FM!

I listen to loads of 5 live via DAB, MW, Freesat, iPad radio app (not iPlayer app much), and laptop radio player browser thingy.

I have not noticed any difference in what is broardcast. But I don't chase down football commentaries.
