Prices in Albufeira?

My family have booked flights to Faro with a view to booking accommodation in Albufeira, this coming August.
They'd prefer self catering but prices seem quite high for this compared with half board...a difference of about £75 per person more for half board.
As it's many years since they were in Albufeira, they're aware it may now be expensive to eat/drink out, therefore half board may be the better option.
Anyone have any idea please of current prices there? Only for large beer/steak and chips type meals:)
Thanks!

I would disagree - a single course would be 7 or 8E (not a massive difference but it mounts up), and a meal to the higher end of your estimate.
Best advice I can give is find out where the locals eat - better food and cheaper prices.0 -

Thanks tallulah - how can they find out where the locals eat though?0 -
I disagree with your disagreement mynameistallulah
I was there 3 month ago + you could get a single course in the old town square for 5 Euro no problem (lunch time)
oh and a beer for a Euro too
If you are half board then expensive hotel drinks with meals can really add up0 -

Usually it's a case of avoiding the main tourist areas and anywhere that looks like it is full of sunburnt Brits. I cannot comment on Albufeira (going there next month for the first time) but in most resorts, if you go back a few streets from the main "Strip" you can save a fortune and get better quality.
Watch out for anywhere offering a "menu del dia" as that will be a fixed menu 2 or 3 course meal including a drink, usually for around €10 or less.
Another option for lunch is go to to a supermarket and buy a selection of bread, meats, cheeses, fruit etc and make a picnic. You can usually buy a carton a gluggable wine for less than €2 for a litre.0 -

I only recently found Portugal as a destination and absolutely love it. In the last few months we have visited both Albufeira and Porto and have been astonished how little meals, drinks, excursions etc cost. With the euro being worth so much, we seemed to benefit even more last week in Porto. In one place we found a 3 course meal with a drink for 12 euros each, happy days! Even staying b&b earlier in the year in Albufeira we spent £550 on two of us for a week with no scrimping and lots of drinking!LBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130

Would anyone say pricing there is on a par with Benidorm?0

Hi zaksmum, I came back from albufura last Friday. It is definitely more expensive than benidorm. We took cereal with us and the kids had that for breakfast, on the days we stayed by the pool we had sandwiches for lunch. There were 3 amazing bakeries very close to us and good bread is very cheap. For dinner we tended just to have a main course as eating out isn't always fun with our children. On avareage Kids meals were 5 Euro and adults between 7 and 10 euro. Cans of fizzy juice were 2 euro. Based on our recent experience I would go half board for the extra. if you have any questions please message me.0
