Can anyone recommend a good sofa bed

Options
My son and his wife are coming to stay next month and have put in a request for me to upgrade the admittedly rather basic small double bed in the spare room for something larger with a more comfortable mattress.

Thing is the spare room is not very large and a bigger bed would take up most of the space so I am thinking sofa bed. But the prices and quality seem hugely variable. And my son wants a decent mattress for a good night's sleep.

Can anyone recommend a good sofa bed with a decent mattress, suitable for two largeish adults, which will not break the bank? I need to be able to get it delivered within the next month. It needs to be suitable to be carried up two flights of stairs BTW.

Really they have put in a request - how rude!! I would tell them to put up or stay at a hotel instead.

No he's right - the mattress is very hard and the bed is a bit small for two adults I have been meaning to change it for some time now...

I have a sofabed from John Lewis that cost about £500.

I have slept in it and it's uncomfortable - really only any good for a child.

If you want something comfortable for 2 adults you need to invest in a sofabed with a proper frame and mattress - they ain't cheap!

I was a fan of futons, and had one when I lived in Montreal. There are futon sofa beds with wooden frames which are not expensive. That would suit me. However, the mattresses tend to be firm which is not to everyone's taste. One advantage is that the frames are simple, so easy-ish to carry through narrow hallways to a room.

There are also metal frames sofa beds, no idea if they will last. I recently discovered Ikea, and they do seem to produce stuff that is well priced for what it is.

IKEA do a fairly large range. I have a LYCKSELE with the firmest mattress option. It's a slatted bed so no springs, which is what I prefer.

I bought this over 10 years ago and it still looks good. The covers are washable and it's fairly comfortable for a settee. It doesn't get much use as it's in our front room (playroom), but my daughter climbs on the arm everyday to reach her books, so it does get mis-treated in that way and it's still as sturdy as ever.

Everyone who has slept on it has commented on how comfy it is.

Alternatively, I quite like the Hemnes Day Bed from Ikea. It's a single bed that transforms to a double, with drawers underneath for storage.

We've tried lots of sofabeds and they all seemed to be compromises. So we now have a very good sofa and an Aerobed. Our guests are very happy.

I wanted a bed while renting a flat, and bought an aerobed. Within a few weeks it leaked. I returned it. The replacement leaked within a few weeks. Discarded. Bought another. Leaked within a few weeks. They are rubbish. In all cases the seams split. I'm no porker either, as I weigh 12 stone, and I took care with these beds. As I say, the seams split, rather than something piercing the material.

Leif, was that an Aerobed (tm) or a generic airbed? I'm very surprised a real Aerobed leaked like that- ours are very sturdy.

The generic ones can be ok for camping, but I wouldn't like to use them for an extended period.
