Contents insurance for shared, rented property

I live in a typical student-style house. Everyone has independent rooms, and independent finances; we just cooperate on the rent and the bills.

I would like contents insurance for just my <£5k of junk; no notable furniture, no expensive instruments or overpriced laptops, etc. I don't care about breakages, I just want some kind of protection in case the place burns down, or water pipes burst, or...

Unfortunately, instead of being students, we're all employed.

This means that we're not eligible for student-targeted deals. In fact, Confused's website won't even let you submit the search if you have more than one adult in a shared property (which I've reported to them), and MoneySupermarket also doesn't seem to support searching for this type of shared insurance.

The best quote returned on Compare The Market, DirectLine etc. is 50% higher than an Endsleigh quote.

Am I looking for the wrong type of insurance?

Are we expected to operate as a collective for insurance? Other members of the household aren't interested in this risk mitigation.

Is there any other insurer that's likely to compete with Endsleigh's offer, which is 50% higher than I paid them last year, so I just assume isn't a good deal?

Firstly there are no typical student type houses - I've house shared with 1 other person to 8 other people.

If there are 2 or 3 of you then you can get a joined normal policy. However as you know you can't get them through the comparison sites so you need to go to as many insurers sites as you can think of, put your details in and read the small print in the policy document.

However as the others aren't interested in getting insurance (and are a risk to you if they were on the policy) do a search on here for companies that insure students as they tend to insure house sharers. I can't remember any companies off hand.

The other thing you can do is pop into a letting agency and see if they have any insurance leaflets about. Then contact the company yourself.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • I have been renting in a shared house for the last three years. Like you we struggled to find an insurance company that would insure us as young professionals rather than students.

In the end we went with Towergate insurance, via Swinton. I think it's £35 per month, in total, so each it works out just under £9 each which is fair.

The trouble I have now is, I'm moving onto another property, trying to get quotes. One of my housemates made a claim on this policy (that we're all named on) and I now have to state that I (we) made a claim on this policy...

    Hope this helps?
