How long before appointing a solicitor?

Hi
I'm just about to make an offer on a flat (no mortgage involved) , but if it's accepted I shall be having a full structural survey done first, as there are some possible structural issues. I have both a surveyor and a solicitor lined up, but is there any reason I should not wait until I've had the survey results - which may take a little while - before asking the solicitor to start work (and thus having to start paying him)? It's just that all the advice websites seem to imply you should ask the solicitor to start work the moment an offer is accepted...

I don't know if there is a standard answer to this but i waited until i had my mortgage offer (was unsure if i was going to get one). I didn't want to pay out the £300 to start searches only to find that I was refused a mortgage and therefore out of pocket.
The sol did seem a little put out when i told them how far we'd got in the process but i wouldn't have thought it makes their lives any harder/easier. Given your situation (unless your in a mad rush to complete) maybe you should wait?0 -
It should be done as soon as you've got an offer that's been accepted. It doesn't really matter if you are buying anyway because the solicitors will only really charge you once unless they've paid out to third parties as you've gone far down the line and need to restart, but the sellers need to know you're serious and their estate agents will want to know your solicitors.0
