If they have communal rooms they should ensure there is sufficient noise insulation to ensure noise levels are reasonable.
Nope, they are cheap and cheerful places. Shared cooking, shared bathrooms, shared toilets and shared noise. They are nowhere near hotels in standards. I don't know why you mention hotels at all.0 -

I agree - the two are not comparable. Hostels by their nature attract groups, and groups make noise. Unless they advertised as "tranquil" or "peaceful", I fail to see how they did not provide the service requested.0 -

Which is why you would expect a certain level of noise and disruption. But that doesn't change the fact the rooms purpose is to sleep, so the level of noise should be reasonable.0 -

Which raises the question of what is reasonable - maybe the OP is overly sensitive to noise? Did anybody else complain?0 -
The CC issuer won't be able to help. The room was booked and available for the OP, they chose to leave. Who is to say that there might not have been any noise for the other 2 nights ?0

Thanks again guys. I have written to the hostel owner quoting the Goods and Services Act because as arcon5 highlights customers who pay for a bedroom should be able to sleep in them. We did have a private room - I may not have been complaining if I was in with the football team!

I don't think i'm particuarly sensitive, I know everywhere is different but over the past few years I must have stayed in over 30 hostels and never had such a bad experience. In fact if you have never considered them, i'd reccommend them because generally what you get is quite basic but perfectly acceptable accomodation.
The hostel owner seems particularly sensitive to bad reviews as she always replies on review sites when the review isn't absolutely perfect so this is why I thought it might be something that would help get my money back. In the letter I didn't specifically mention reviews but did state that if she resolves the matter then I wouldn't 'make others aware of my expereince'. It's the only armour i've got.0 -
Quite surprised at hostelbookers as I know the Director. Would Suggest calling them again and asking to speak to Louise regarding this0
