Guys,

got a mate who needs a VPN connection to his office pc....any recs for a DECENT free one ?? With reasonable encryption...

Just to clarify, office pc will be on 24/7, and secure access required from a remote location, possibly from a fixed IP address (although if the authentication/encryption is good enough, not necessarily). He's used UltraVNC previously but that had been hacked and the office pc turned into a russian gameserver !!!

thanks - he's tried LMI before, but he said he didn't get on with it...think I'll read up some more on it in case he's missed some bits that would have made it better for him...
As with most software, finding the ideal one is a bit of a 'mare...teamviewer free is limited in that you need the "live" password to connect into it (no good when there's no-one in the office), UltraVNC is how the hackers got in, not an easy choice unfortunately :(

So is hamachi inherently more secure than the standard LMI ?? The basic mesh config looks like it may suit him for his needs, however security is a must...and it looks like it's paid-for after a free trial ???

    Nope :D
Aaah ok then does his "work" not supply something like Citrix etc? Has he got full admin rights at work including Routers et al? Suppose I am asking stupid questions since you asked us for help:cool: Openssl/openssh/VNC(or similar) might work
    Edited also OpenVPN project too.

If the remote connection is from home, you could use a vpn capable router at both ends, then use vnc over that.

Teamviewer password can be set within the software, (for personal use), the numerical code is derived from the mac address, so shouldn't change

Also, there are various encrypted vnc options.

Thanks guys, he wants a purely software solution...he owns the setup, but understandably nervous after being hacked using UltraVNC :(
