Some of my best times in Thailand were in and around Chiang Mai , was a few years ago mind.

Yes, Chiang Mai is one of my favourite parts of Thailand and I'm planning on going back later this year. Old Timers will tell you that it's not as good as it used to be but I still think it's a nice balance between too busy and too quiet - even if crossing the road involves risking your life every time.

In terms of natural beauty the island is amazing but once on the island there isn't much there apart from countless dive shops and the redevelopment after the tsunami was done with no thought at all. Still it's worth short stop on a boat tour of the islands but I wouldn't stop there overnight.

Third (? I've lost count) vote for Kanchanaburi. We stayed in Apple's guest house right by the river. If I remember, the very basic but clean and perfectly nice rooms were about £12/night, 3 years ago. The food there is awesome and we did a day's cookery course with her. Also they give you bikes to use for free :)

We also spent time in Ko Phi Phi (hated it, over-rated and over-developed) and Ko Lanta, which was ok but not as nice as we'd been led to believe, the beaches weren't fab and it was more expensive than I was expecting. Apples is the place I have fondest memories of.

I stayed there for 5 days when I spent 3 weeks in Thailand and loved it :-) my mate went over in march, meant to stay for 2 nights and stayed 8. It's a great place to chill at the end of ur trip.
