I am already debt free but due to my "money saving habit" quite a pot is building up ! I am now SOOOO reluctant to spend on rubbish that I don't need - it becomes a bit of a worry all of it's own. I know people will chase the "charity dragon " bot that is not always the point. After all my scrimping I would like to treat myself but I have become so used to telling myself "NO" that it becomes impossible

Well, my DFD is Oct 2012 and as I'm getting married on 5th October 2013 the majority of my money will be put aside for my wedding. If I save really hard I'll have £8,500 saved! The Venue and catering has already been accounted for so I can spend what I've saved on everything else we need for the wedding :D
After 11 years in big debt I can honestly say that there is a light at the end of a very long tunnel! After the wedding I'm planning to save for a mortgage for a house. Once the house is obtained it's Mini Cooper and German Shepherd time :j
Keep going, your DFD will arrive and all those things you dream of can turn into reality in time :p

Our DFD is also in Feb next year! I am so looking forward to it, it has been slightly marred by the fact I am under notice of redundancy but the thought of being debt free outweighs any worries about looking for another job. I'm getting a decent payout that I won't have to use to pay any debt back and that feels just great! :) I expect I'll book a holiday and then log on to my bank account everyday to see how much I have in my savings :rotfl:
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!!

Although I'm not quite debt free yet, I definately know what you mean with that feeling of thinking every penny counts and not to waste it on "wants". Keep strong with money, it's yours...use it wisely :)

I aim to be completely debt free by September 2013....with the extra £200 a month, I plan to actually live my life; go out and do the things I want to do and spend time with friends and family, then put some into getting back into education :)
  • I've been debt free since April 2008 and we got married in October 2008 so I started saving the wedding and honeymoon. We had a truly fabulous day and an even more amazing and lavish honeymoon all paid for with savings! A concept that wouldn't have occurred to me prior to my debt busting days.

Once the wedding was over we saved to have 6 months worth of expenses saved as an emergency fund. The plan after this was to save for a move house as I'd estimated it was going to cost £20k in fees just to move (damn 3% stamp duty!). Unfortunately as soon as we achieved our 6 month target, I was made redundant from my well paid job so that set us back a little.

Luckily I had structured our finances so that we didn't need my money so it only set back the savings target and not ordinary finances.

I only managed to get a part time job after redundancy and then fell pregnant a few months later.

Fast forward to today and we have 12+ months emergency expenses saved and the money for moving house. Our current house is on the market and we hope to move within the next few months.

Reading this back I'm actually quite proud of what we have achieved. It has been such a huge learning curve for me.

Keep going everyone. You will get there eventually. Good luck!
Debt at LBM (March 2006): £30,000
DEBT FREE SINCE APRIL 2008!!!! YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!
  • With the extra 470 quid a month I will have in just over a year's time I intend to start doing up my house - need new carpets, curtains, internal doors, decorating throughout. We've had to make do and mend for so long, it'll be lovely to have a home I can be proud of and not embarrassed to invite people in.

I want to put 6ft fencing up round the back garden so I don't have to see our miserable, busybody next door neighbours anymore.

And I want to go to New York with my 3 best mates as we're all 50 in 2 years time.
    Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
    And now the final frame
    Love is a losing game

1st of all congrats on being nearly debt free! And to everyone who has still got a way to go - keep at it, it really is so worthwhile.

I've just made my final payment this month to clear my debts and it has been a long time coming!! So from next month (July) I've worked out I can afford to save approx £600 per month. Whilst I understand the point some people have made about having savings "just in case" I personally am more in the mind of having a damn good holiday first and as my brother is thinking of getting married in Sri Lanka next year, the timing couldn't have been better. As I am single and my son is now 18 I am in a position that I can really do whatever I want and only have myself to think of (but not sure if that's a good thing or not!! )

The second thing I want to do is get rid of the car that I bought when my credit rating wasn't too good and therefore the interest I have been paying is astronomical. Boy will it be a good feeling to be able to pay cash for a car.

Then thinking slightly more long-term I would love to be able to help my son towards a deposit to buy a home (not to get rid of him obvs! but to get him onto the property ladder - honest)!

Anyway, sorry for waffling on but it's my 1st time on here and writing things down is so cathartic...
    Savings Target 2015 £10/£3000 :rotfl:
