Looking to buy a car and have seen one i like. The only concern i have is the fact that is advertised as sorn but still has tax on it, since the owner hasnt sent the tax back for a refund is it still valid? are there any possible problems around the corner?

No doubt the owner will send the tax back, or has forgotten. If it's sorn, that'll show on the dvla computer, and the tax is cancelled. The only way to un-sorn it is to buy new tax.0

Possibly he thinks you need to sorn it, but don't send the tax back. The tax disk is worthless now though, so don't include it in the price.0

Thanks for the replies, I spoke to the seller concerning the tax and have just had a message from him as follows.
"have just spoken to DVLA and they said once the new keeper has it insured I can phone DVLA and transfer the tax to the new owner."
It seems that it's possible to keep the tax after all unless he's had bad info.0 -

dont pay extra for it as said because seller might still try and cash it after you have bought the car
its happened to me twice this year0 -
Sounds a bit dubious to me, what is the point of telling people they need to SORN and return unused tax if you don't have to. I'd would have thought that when you come to relax the car next time you could be hit with paying the backtaxBe Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

That's a new one on me. I didn't thnk it was possible to go from sorn to taxed, without actually buying tax.0
