Sun Life / Friends Life Maturity of policy

I've had one of those Carol Smilie Cashbuilder Bonus Bond policies for 15 years and it matures in July.
I've had a letter today with a final figure (subject to final bonus changes). I knew several years ago that I wasn't going to be able to retire on the proceeds and that as an investment it was pretty rubbish and the final amount is kind of what I thought it might be.
My question is, is the figure at all negotiable? because it's only about £700 more than I paid in. If I call them, is there a possibility of improving on the figure? The reason I ask is I have read here that when people have surrendered them early and been offered a small amount, when the policy holder protests, the surrender value has been upped.
Or am I wasting the cost of a phone call and should I be satified that the company hasn't gone to money heaven?

Thanks. I've never had one of these before (and probably never will again) but at least I know."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
