Named Driver on Car Insurance

Hi All!

Does anyone know if a UK car insurance exists where they do not limit you to a number of days for named drivers?

We are with Tesco Car insurance and they limit it to 90 days for that year, I need this for a longer period as we have quite a few friends/ relatives coming to stay and they might want to use the car.

Named drivers can usually drive on any day or every day, as long as they aren't the main driver.

So if the main driver drives 30 miles to work and back every day and in the evening her daughter travels 10 miles to college every day; that would be fine.

I've never heard of a limit to the number of days a named driver can drive. Are you sure you're not confusing it with the number of days full cover is provided in Europe?

How could an insurance company possibly prove one way or another whether such a limit was exceeded?

You might need to get any driver ins which will probably expensive.
Perhaps you can put other drivers on for a short time, ask your insurer.

What exactly does your certificate say? Is the cover for named drivers only e.g. yourself and spouse/partner? If so you need to ring them with the other driver details and ask how much it will cost to add them to the insurance.

If your certificate states that anyone can drive with your permission then, subject to any constraints shown in the policy wording such as over 25's only, full licence, increased excess etc, then anyone can drive the vehicle.

Do remember though that if the named driver has an accident, then your bonus will be affected as it is your policy they will be driving on.

Maybe the 90 day limit is to avoid someone adding a young, or hard to insure, driver to their policy in order for the other driver to have main use of the vehicle on the cheap? This has become a common fraud where parents insure a car and name a young driver on the policy, with the intent of the young driver using the car almost all the time.

We have car insurance with LV for two separate cars, each is a named driver on the other policy, there are no limits as to how many days a year we can drive the other vehicle.

Apologies for the confusion, I should have clarified this is for temporary named driver for say X amount of days. Tesco insurance will only allow a total of 30 days for any (temp) named drivers with the policy period.

The people I want to add are close friends who are from Australia/ US etc who will be visiting and may want to use our car. Are there any car insurance polices that specialize in adding international drivers for short periods of time?
