Best way to invest childrens savings?

At the moment my kids savings of around £1k each are in a basic Nationwide Kids cashbuilder account in their names(wife & I are authorised signatures)
I can only guess that thier money is not earning much interest but is tax free.
Is there a better way of investing their money in their names like a kids ISA or other..?
We may require quick access from time to time to allow them (controlled) treats for themselves!
Thanks as usual

CTF or JISA savings are not available to the child until he is 18.
