Advice on car insurance please!

Am hoping some knowledgeable people can help me! I am currently looking at buying my neighbour's oldish Golf (T Reg) as a second car/runaround and for something my husband can get his licence in (he currently has a provisional) and then he can be the main driver. It's probably worth about £600.
I have maximum no claims on my car (Alfa 156) but some companies won't let you mirror the NC to the second car. Is there any way of knowing which companies do this as otherwise I've got to spend hours going through quote after quote on the phone, only for them to tell me at the end that it's not possible!
Any other ideas for the best way to do this would be much appreciated. My current insurers (Aviva) have quoted £1300 which is more than the car is worth! Is it best to do it in my name and have him as a named driver?
Hopefully waiting for some gems of inspiration...!
Thanks
Sharron

The vast majority dont do mirroring and the few that did are getting less common as multi-car policies/ discounts become more common instead.
As I am sure you are aware, if you run someone over in a £600 car you are going to have exactly the same effect as if you run them over in a £60,000. It is third party claims that are the big concerns for insurers, not first party.
Your best bet is your own insurer.
Given you have no NCD to use on the vehicle it may as well go straight into his name and he can start earning his own NCD. Be aware of cause that when he passes his test it will go up in premium too.
How old is he, by the way?
It does sound a fairly hefty premium assuming he is v.late 20s or early/mid 30s. Obviously totally different if he is early 20s or younger0 -
Hi - thanks for your advice although it is mostly depressing! He is 39, 40 in September. He has held a full licence thought not in this country and it has expired - he just has to pass the UK test.0
