Though if they did generate a black hole, nowhere would be safe, including the south pacific island mentioned.

Barely. Some scientists came up with theories that a microscopic back hole might be created, but none of them said it would devour the Earth.

But predictably non-scientist got as far as the thought of a black hole and leapt to conclusions and even law suits against CERN.
