compensation

A phone provider took over my line even though I had
cancelled the order, by letter, by email and by phone and
they admit they have made a mistake
Ofcom did mention compensation but I do not know what
amount to ask for
If I now go back to my original provider they want a new 12
month contract although I was without a contract when
my line was incorrectly taken over

    It's not money for nothing - £25 would be reasonable, but it isn't 'slamming' as you intimated the transfer then cancelled. Further you were not 'out of contract' at any point.

    Your minimum term is separate from the contract, but it is not unreasonable for the original telco to impose their standard terms, so 12 months will be normal irrespective of who you go to.

    My original phone provider had said that I could leave without any
    notice as my original contract had expired 4 years ago and I was on
    a rolling arrangement but as soon as my 'new' provider took over the
    line incorrectly a new contract would be necessary to come back

    If you want to be in a no minimum term contract, then they are available (eg post office have no minimum term)

    Your original provider was talking nonsense. nobody can have service without being in contract - which I pointed out in my reply. Also nothing 'rolled' the term is actually nonsensical as your contract remained unaltered, with you only completing the minimum term restriction.

    Because you intimated the change, and then changed your mind means any compensation would be limited as incompetence is allowed for. It would be up to your original provider to waive their minimum term rule, but as you willingly wanted to leave them (although later changing your mind) they'll not be anxious to do this as I costs them money to hook you up again.
