Self propelled petrol mower under £200

I would like to buy my husband a new lawnmower. it needs to be under £200, petrol and self propelled as we have a big garden.
We spent a lot of money on the last Flymo (I think) one and it has only hasted a few years before going kaput and a new B&S carburettor seems to be impossible to get hold of.
I've seen a couple on Tesco and the middle of the range one is reduced to £140. I'll be honest, I have no idea on what the HP means and what difference it would make to the cutting of it, to me it's a mower and it cuts grass. But I am sure it is not as simple as that so if anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be most appreciated.

This seems like a good one.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMC-Petrol-Mower-Self-Propelled-5-5HP-BIG20-Wolf-Engine-/370620666690?pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenPowerTools_CA&hash=item564ab69342
Not sure we want one with a B&S engine because the parts have been so hard to get hold of for the one we have now.0 -
Should be no problem getting BS spares as they are one of the most widely used engines around. (have you tried these, not used them myself but range ok. http://www.diyspareparts.com/parts/briggs-and-stratton/)
I would go for the Mountfield over the tesco branded one.
Don't forget that there is some assembly required for "shed" bought machines, from a mower shop it could be assembled and checked for you but may cost a bit more. Any repairs/service is easier to arrange as well.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
I have a petrol Mountfield Mower. My dad bought it in 1973, and I inherited it when he died. It still starts second pull. Im pretty sure its 5 HP engine, if you run over a brick it just chops it up and spits the bits out.............**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. I've been looking for an electric self propelled, but can't find a decent one for under £200 anywhere!Tim0

Watch out for the Eco battery models, when the battery goes its about £120 to replace, and no you can't just slot a normal one in as its 24 volt.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Hi again, thank you for the advice.
I went to get a mountfield mower from screwfix and got speaking to a guy in there who was walking around and he sent me to a local place in town which I had completely forgotten about and they gave me loads of advice in there. They also loads of recondition mowers which means we can get a better mower, with a warranty, for the same money.
I also got told that the engines in the RED Mountfield mowers are made overseas now whereas the Red and Silver Mountfield mowers have very reliable Honda engines. However, they cost in excess of £500.
I tried to called Flymo for a new carb and they sent me to B&S and then after constantly getting the 'this line is busy, call back later' message all the time so I gave up with that.
The local shop said they can probably get a new carb but I am going ask my husband whether he wants the mower or carb sorted and leave it for him to decide.0 -
I've got one in my shed that we used to use for the huge lawn in our old house but now we have no lawn it's no good to us. If you are anywhere near the Midlands you can have it for nowt.
I'm off to a festival in half an hour but if you are nearby, and can wait til next week it's yours. PM me.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Ah sambucus, you are so kind to offer that, thank you. Not anywhere near you sadly but that is so very kind of you though.0
