No it was actually the Olympic Council of Ireland who let him down. Jedward and Paul McGrath were considered more suitable choices as torchbearers.

Sure with the size of the wee man himself the torch would have been bigger :p

There was a post on another thread about the imaginary Olympic "Deliverance Team" as portrayed by the spoof TV show "Twenty Twelve" discussing something like this.

I wonder what idiot wrote this!!

Problem is that Barry is 'old hat'...you ask a person under 25 y/o who Barry McGuigan is & they'll say "Who?" in all likelyhood.I'm sure the only reason people know who George Best is because he's got an airport named after him.

And Mary Peters won her gold medal when?

But she did win an Olympic gold medal. Barry never won one at all.

Much as i agree that it was a joke to have Jedward carry the torch, they are current. Barry isn't.

Yes, he was on the Nolan Show last night and stated he had not been asked. He sounded genuinely upset that he had been snubbed/ignored.
YOU could have put his name forward, his wife could have, anybody could have...

one of my colleagues is carrying it because his sister put his name forward, with a reason why he should be a torchbearer and he got picked.

My question is, why do they have to have a torch for each person - 8000 torches at about £250 a pop if I remember correctly (at least, that's what the runners are being asked to pay). OK, so the runners can buy them if they want, but if not many buy them that's a lot of money wasted on them!!

**just looked them up and spotted a quote of c.£500 a pop to make, so even if they sell them all they will still cost a lot.

I notice this thread was posted in the Moneysavers Arms, the purpose built home for non consumer or money related threads. It really takes those from GB to show how to use a forum properly!

The biggest disgrace is that 'Jedward' carried the torch.

I thought that torchbearers were chosen for their 'contribution to society'
