Hastings have taken two debit card payments without consent

Hi guys, I wondered if you could offer some advice.
I have had my policy with Hastings for a couple of years now. I used my debit card to pay the deposit originally and then set up a direct debit for the monthly payments.
I lost my job a couple of months ago so because I didn't need my car I wrote to them about a month ago to ask them to cancel my policy.
I have just returned from a break and have found that Hastings have taken two payments of £40 from my debit card to pay off what I owe to them.
The question is not whether I owe them the money but can they do this without my permission? I have never given them permission to take recurring payments from my debit card, only for a one off payment which was the deposit.
Many thanks

Check your terms and conditions, it's probably mentioned in there. How were you intending to pay them ?0

How annoying, my view is that ‘Recurring Payments’ should be outlawed.
I suggest that you read the guide on the main site on Recurring Payments:-

Sorry but I don’t believe that you have a easy resolution to this, I would also question if Hastings have cancelled your policy and agree that you don’t own them anything.
I suggest you telephone them and find out what’s going on.
Good Luck0 -

If you never gave permission for recurring payments then they can't (aren't allowed to) do it. Contact your bank to dispute the transactions would be the first step.0 -
The card payments have been taken in accordance with their stated terms to which you agreed:-
"We use a third party to collect and store card details in accordance with industry standards. We will use the card details stored on our behalf to collect payment for mid-term changes, defaulted instalments including the associated fee, balances following cancellation and for renewal of your policy. We will inform you in advance of doing so."
