How do I fix curtain rail to poor wall?

Need to fix a curtain pole to a section of wall above a window that seems to be of bad quality.The plaster seems quite brittle?
Been scratching my head and even thought of battoning the wall first but are there any recomended fixings that I could try that might do the trick?

Curtains and pole are not actually that heavy -just 1/2 length bedroom heavies but where I need to hang them is causing me a headache!

We had the same problen at one time and found the wooden batten the best overall. Above the window will be a lintel that hold the wall above the window in place, and it could be metal H or concrete, so if you place your battem to be wider than the window you could drill into the wall, fit rawplugs and screw your batten to the wall.

Hi, the important thing is to know what your wall is made of - if it's brick, block etc then you're just drilling through the plaster to fix into whatever's behind, so drill gently through the plaster and into the brick/lintel/whatever. Then tap your plug* through the plaster and into the solid material behind, and use a longer screw - a 3" one usually does the trick, thickness depending on the size of bit/plugs used.

*if it's a metal lintel, a long self-tapping screw.

I'm guessing it's not plasterboard, for which I would recommend a proper metal plasterboard fixing.
