Thank you all for your help but I would feel very deceitful towards my landlord if I didn't mention it. I could also claim council tax benefit but was too afraid to claim it in case they asked why i didn't claim housing benefit.:o0

It's not deceitful at all. Just go for it you have a family to support and an extra few pounds housing and council tax benefit will go a long way. Landlord's just want money and as long as they get it on time every month they don't ask questions about it's source. They just get scared when people solely rely on benefit cheques to pay the rent as they can easily stop.Thank you all for your help but I would feel very deceitful towards my landlord if I didn't mention it. Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

There's nothing deceitful about claiming what you are entitled to. Don't feel shame.0 -

Local housing allowance is now paid directly to the landlord unless the tenant is classed as vulnerable by the council, for example, have a learning difficulty that makes it hard for them to manage money.0 -
...however I was just curious as to why it seems to be so difficult for people who need a bit of extra help to get it.
As per before, this is purely about business risk - HB claimants are riskier for many reasons. Renting is a business.
Private landlords aren't a branch of social services and they probably resent the way that social housing is disappearing so that the vulnerable are not getting the most suitable accommodation and support they deserve.0
