Yorkshire - places to go (without kids)

Hi

In addition to the thread from a couple of weeks ago on places to go in Yorkshire with kids, I wondered if anyone could recommend any good places to go minus kids.

It's my OH's birthday next week (he'll be 33) and we're looking for things to do. We're based in Harrogate and so far have thought of the Bradford Media Museum, The Forbidden Corner and The Yorkshire Wildlife Park. (I'm 5 months pregnant, but still pretty active so walking isnt too much of an issue).

Any other good ideas? We're a bit worried it might rain, but have two days off together, so will be able to fit in at least two activities!

Thanks :j

What about York (can recommend Castle Museum and definitely a ghost walk), Castle Howard or Eden Camp? I've enjoyed all of these when staying in Yorkshire. Skipton Castle is good too followed by a walk down by the canal.

Have you ever done the Harrogate things?

    Turkish baths
    Harlow Carr
    Mother shiptons
    Walked all round valley gardens
    Ripley castle
    Pump rooms
Had a picnic on the stray?

It amazes my children that people come to Harrogate for the weekend but they seem to manage to find enough to do.

Plus if all else fails I once read it has more bars and restaurants per head of the population than anywhere lse in the uk. Not sure if that true but still seem to be new restaurants every week in town.

Be careful with the Turkish Baths hun, they aren't really recommended when pregnant, although you could always get OH to treat you to a facial/manicure or massage. :)
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I had a meal last year in the Chinese that's in the Royal Baths. It was amazing, lovely staff, great food and the most beautiful building.

If he likes his ale, Black Sheep Brewery at Masham might be an idea - they do tours of the brewery, there's also a bar, bistro and shop. It's only about 40 min drive away from you.

The forbidden corner is great fun without kids - in fact probably best go now as can be a struggle with little tiny ones! That might be the way to go - think of things that you enjoy now and do something like that as in another few months you'll be so busy looking for a quiet corner to feed LO and taking the kitchen sink with you some places can be a trial. Parceval Hall gardens at Appletreewick is lovely a nice walk up through the woods and great views at the top - also a nice little tearoom at the bottom, great with a sling or backpack (once they are old enough) but no good with a pushchair so why no enjoy it now - lovely and romantic!

Hope you have a lovely couple of days.

York is a must, Castle Museum is brilliant and the York Boat too.
    National Railway Museum is free.
Lovely to wander round too and look above eye level. There is a park and ride on the ring road which I believe is about £1. Parking in York is expensive.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Brimham Rocks
    Fountains Abbey
    Newby Hall
    Fewston Reservoir
    York Walls

If we were free and without children I'd travel a little further North up to Northumberland (2hrs) and visit Lindisfarne, Alnwick gardens, Cragside, Dunstanburgh castle etc

All gentle walks and easily doable whilst pregnant. Make the most of it now! x
