Hi kingfisherblue,
I wear BTE hearing aids and hate wearing headphones over the top of them, it's really uncomfortable and causes feedback
Have you tried just taking the aids out and using headphones normally? This might work fine if your son's hearing loss is not too severe, I know a few HOH people who do this.
At the moment I use a Bluetooth streamer that connects my Oticon NHS aids wirelessly to my ipod, it's really easy to use and the sound quality is great (much better than telecoil). A lot of NHS aids have wireless now, so it's worth asking the audiologist about it. The only downside is that the streamers are quite expensive.
Before that I had direct input shoes, which I prefer over telecoil neckloops/earhooks. The shoes are little plastic widgets that clip on the bottom of the aids and connect via wires to the headphone socket. Some of them can be a bit fiddly to attach, but the sound quality is excellent and the program switching is automatic. Connevans sell direct input shoes and leads for most makes and models of BTE aids. http://www.connevans.co.uk/store/viewCategory.do?id=1080 -
Thanks piglet. I'll ask the audiologist this morning. Using headphones without the aids might be possible, as my son's hearing is not as bad in his right ear. I'll also check out the wireless and direct input shoes information. I woiuldn't normally say this, but cost isn't a massive issue because a local charity have kindly donated some money towards apps and anything else R needs for his Ipad. I just need to keep the receipts, and have to spend before March next year.
To give you an idea of R's hearing loss, the audiologist told me that you usually hear at 20db. R hears at 65-80db in his left ear, and about 45db in his right ear. He then received his left side hearing aid. A few weeks later, he was struggling to hear with his right ear, and I took him back for another test. The audiologist said that his hearing had deteriorated in his right ear slightly, so a mould was made. She did say that they will make a decision today as to whether he will need to wear an aid on the right side. If he doesn't get an aid, then using headphones without the left hand aid in place should definitely be a possibility.
I'll report back later0 -
Hi everyone, I've spoken to the audiologist, but she didn't really know much about what would be most suitable for my son. She's going to make enquiries for me, but in the meantime, I have bought a pair of chunky headphones with large dents for the ears. My son loves them! So far there has been no interference with the aids (and he did get an aid for his right ear), but if he does get interference, we can try the headphones witohut the aids as his hearing loss isn't too bad.
Thanks for your help everyone,
