It's cheaper and quicker by train - £27 off peak (walk on) return

Via Southampton/Barnham - not Clapham Junction which is a lot more expensive

Now that is interesting. Is that one of those "split ticketing" thingies? The MSE app splits at Clapham on journeys to London.

If you combine that with the 4 for 2 offer it's less than £15pp.

PS: Just tried it on SW Trains. It works! This opens up a whole new world of travel opportunities.

PPS: OP - the trains are
outbound: dep 06:56 arr 09:37 or dep 07:30 arr 10:08
return: dep 16:09 arr 18:48 or dep 16:40 arr 19:13

The via Barnham route is a regular fare - no split involved, just a change of trains, normally at Southampton. Off peak starts much earlier on this route than via Clapham Junction and it's cheaper anyway

Most of the route is operated by Southern.

Yeah I've gone the reverse route before after landing - I think all of the route is southern and it goes through pretty nice country between ford and christs hospital
