This isn't really a DIY question i suppose as, if my suposition is correct, it will require a gas safe engineer.
I do, however, like to have an idea of what is wrong before i get someone in to look at a fault.

Symptoms:-

Boiler will start up perfectly well when given demand but after approx. 8 to 10 minutes the "burner" will go out.
Everything else continues to run and a spark can be seen / heard but the burner fails to re-ignite.

Edit:- on testing again, just before the main burner goes out an audible "clunk" is heard.

To my untrained mind this suggests the gas solenoid / valve is breaking down and failing to "safe" and removing gas flow.

Does that sound a reasonable conclussion (based on the fact it does work for a period of time)?

The Boiler itself has been a problem child for the last 10 years so i'm considering replacing it and would also be interested in opinions of similar size systems that might be a good replacement.

Again, i'm not going to mess with anything related to gas, i just like to have a rough idea what is going on.

cheers,

  • could be a number of things. the clunk could well be the gas valve closing, but it could be because the power to it is being stopped for other reasons. over heat, fan slowing down as it gets warm, etc

    Thanks for that.
Fairly certain it isn't overheating as it isn't going into a lockout state.
Had that when the thermistor died a couple of years ago.

The fan is still spinning and it is trying to re-light the burner (after it goes out). I take your point that if it isn't drawing properly it might cause it to close down the gas.

I know, from the last inspection, the plastic impellor on top looks in a poor state but the rest of the unit was sound.

I'm not sure how much work that does or if it is just to balance the fan?

It sounds as if the gas valve has had it, very common on these and as you suggest, will need a gas safe engineer to replace it.

Sadly I don't have access to a multi meter at the moment which is why i couldn't do a proper check.

I've managed to get an engineer recommendation (my previous "guy" has retired) so I'll get on to them today.

I'm leaning towards having the boiler replaced as it has been a problem child over the last decade.
