Commuter rail travel in Scotland (cheap tickets?)

Hi folks,
I've been offered a job in Edinburgh and I am considering travelling to work from Arbroath initially. I phoned National Rail  and they offered:
7-day season ticket @£98
or a monthly season @£380
I've noticed Virgin's Value Advance can be purchased for £15 each day, but I can't be sure of getting one every day and of course that restricts me to a particular train - which could be troublesome if I'm late, for example.
What are my best options for tickets for this journey? I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give. FYI - I'm under 26.
Many thanks in advance,
Ian

I've had a play around and it does look like you would either have to get the season ticket or buy the value fares and stick to the exact trains. Obviously it may depend on your circumstances but I would carefully consider your decision to commute, 3hrs a day can be very soul destroying!!

I know that this is not the answer you want but could you drive part of the way? My sister lives in Forfar but drives into Fife to either a railway station (Kirkcaldy) or the park and ride at Inverkeithing. This means that the hassle part of the journey is covered by the excellent and cheap bus service into and out of Edinburgh or, if she is travelling off peak then the train is cheaper, quieter and more frequent from Kirkcaldy. It's about 60 miles to Inverkeithing but you are driving away from the jams so should be easy to do.0
