Why would you go for the Dell laptop when you can get a Fujitsu-siemens L7300 of similar spec for £440 at comet(£450 instore),http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/232823.html ,just wondered? Is there a problem with the Fujitsu. Having had to deal with Dell over the phone, surely comet must be better, or at least local. According to the Fujitsu site it has wireless.http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/lifebook/Amilo%20L/Amilo_L7300.htm
  • I could not get one on the Dell site, as it said the "link was broken" when I put the code in, so I phoned the number 0870 907 4155 and they fixed me up with one for £422.00 including vat and shipping. Watch out though, they go for the hard sell on the upgrades!! - I think I will go for the 512 upgrade with 'Crucial' at £54.04 instead of the Dell £94.00, if I think i need it.

since the laptop is shipped with 256 mb, you would just need an extra 256 to get up to 512.

Boatman - Sounds like a good deal - if its not already up here as a post that deserves one of its own particularly as you can walk into a store and get one rather than having to wait for it to be delivered. Still, i think the Dell 510m is a cracking deal so i guess you pays your money ....

Also I've bought loads from dell with no problems so dealing with them online doesn't worry me - never bought over the phone though!

For those having problems - when i last checked, if you just went to dell, home user, laptops, you could get to the 510m that way at that price.
  • Thanks Hanoijane - I am not that familiar with upgrading - it looks like i could upgrade for about £22 with the PC World 256mb then?

If you are not sure about this call the crucial helpline they are unbelievable! There staff are very helpful. Proably up there with Dyson for customer service. They number is 0800. Remember to touch something earthed before you unwrap the RAM and install. If you need to test the memory MEMTEST is a good program only 63k zipped for the CD image version. http://www.memtest86.com/

Crucial are owned by Micron Technologies. They make the RAM for all the big PC companies, HP, DEL, etc.. Many companies buy branded RAM from the likes of HP, if you look near the HP label there is a greek mu symbol this is the Micron symbol showing they made the chip!

Don't be put off about the memory upgrade. If you are not sure just ask.

    PS.

Remember HP, Dell, etc do not make processors, memory, disks, etc they just buy and resell! (Actually they don't make laptops either they OEM, just like Nike do not make trainers: Number of factories making trainers own by Nike = Zero, like number of bottling plants owned by Pepsi almost Zero (except 3 plants in Greece!)

[search for Greek small letter mu on this page http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/entities/symbols.html]

I noticed Ebuyer has crucial ram with free shipping (Crucial is free and faster!) but worht comparing prices. Get EXACTLY the right part number though! Ebuyer do not offer the friendly services that Crucial do ;) Nothing wrong with ebuyer, but you have to know want you want!

Not worth going with other makes of memory. I use crucial for all desktop and laptops.

Also cheaplatops of sorts (No OS etc!)

Ordered mine before midnight (29-03-05) on the website at £450.94 (including carrycase).
All seemed ok till I got the confirming invoice today - They changed my order date to 30-03-05 and have charged an extra £57.58 making the order £508.52!!!

I' not too happy about this sneaky delivery charge, since it was advertised as FREE delivery when I placed my order!

I'll surely cancel if they don't remove it! has anyone had similar experience?

yeah they seem to have shuffled their offers round again. I see from the main site that they appear to be starting the range from the 1.5 Ghz processor now too....

The Hacker. I'd phone them about that - if it was advertised with free delivery then thats what it should be.

    Done that already pgilc1.
Was "stone-walled" by ALL UK call centre reps (called 3 times no joy).

They said my order was submitted 3 secs late, yes!! - 3 seconds!!!
    Can u believe it?
I actually submitted it 10mins before midnight!!

Managed to call 4th time and got through to India call centre where delivery charge was promised to be refunded. Let's keep fingers crossed.

Who's says Indian call centres are bad - give me them any day!

Foreign call centre staff are more polite and helpful rather than the rude, obnoxious overpaid lot that operate the UK call centres.

This is of course based on my experience today.
