Sheffield Star doing another article on PPC's need some info

Hi guys and gals

The star is doing another story and has asked me a couple of questions, the is one bit i do not know

How much does the DVLA make each year from the 2.50 fees it charges?

Has anyone Done an FOI or would i need to get one done. Or a rough figure based on available data would be great.

Any help appreciated:)

Looking on the DVLA site they claim they do not profit from it.

How much profit does DVLA make from data release?

We don’t make any profit. Although the regulations allow us to charge a fee to cover the processing costs of providing information, we are similarly prohibited from making a profit.
How many requests for information does DVLA receive each year?

Last year we received around 9.4 million requests.

Where do most of the requests come from?

The majority of last year’s requests, approximately 7.8 million, came from the police and local authorities.

How many requests were from car parks?

Of the 9.4 million requests received last year, only about 800,000 were from parking companies.

His username is NevMetson I think.

The DVLA claim the £2.50 just covers their costs. Of course its an electronic data system with no humans involved (although I suspect they get the odd query to chase up). This clearly costs £2.50 a pop (sarcasm).

800,000 x £2.50 makes 2 million quid. It is inconceivable that it would cost this amount of money to provide the data.

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-2117083/Hi-tech-parking-enforcement-tricks-leading-explosion-automatic-fines-private-firms-DVLA-figures-reveal.html

The number of electronic requests from private parking companies for vehicle details from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has leapt from 272,215 in 2006/07 to 1,167,713 in 2010/11 - a rise of 329 per cent. With the average fine from private parking firms at £80, it means penalties generated this way now cost drivers £93million each year, compared to £21million in 2007.

The requests are made by parking firms so they can send penalty fines to drivers. They do not represent the fines from paper tickets attached to windscreens, but where offences are recorded electronically by the firm without the driver being notified at the time.

    1.2 million @ £2.50 = £3,000,000

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9179438/DVLA-sells-details-to-convicted-criminal.html

The DVLA sold motorists’ names and addresses to a parking enforcement company just seven weeks after it admitted dozens of criminal offences.

Observices Parking Solutions, run by Douglas Harris, was fined £29,850 after a court ruled it had been “recklessly unfair” to drivers last year.

DVLA bosses were aware of the conviction but still sold on the personal details, it has been alleged.

The number of names and addresses being sold by the DVLA to parking enforcement companies has more than tripled since 2006 and its income from the sale of personal data has reached a total of £20.8million over the past five years.

Even BBC Watchdog is onto it
